The art of conversation in a digital world
Our CEO Andy Lord offers his take on the future of conversation in an increasingly digital world.
The digital world’s cutthroat, fast paced, fascinating and never ceases to amaze me.
It’s intrinsic to every part of Rethink Group; from the thousands of candidates we’re placing in digital roles, to the increasing integration of RTM clients’ tech resource to Code Nation, it’s something I’m very interested in.
But I do often wonder if we still have one valuable, indispensible human trait in an increasingly digital world – the art of conversation. No matter how sophisticated things like Artificial Intelligence (AI) become, the sentience of a human approach is still surely still the USP that will close the deal.
Technology is transforming everything in recruitment – and at such a rate that can make your head spin. AI will absolutely be the next big thing in our industry, and algorithms and software which help businesses and candidates connect are no bad thing.
But regardless of how slick that becomes, AI can’t pick up a phone, build a rapport or have a real life conversation; it can’t pick up nuances and subtleties and change the inference and tone of voice to match, mirror and compliment the person on the other end of the conversation.
Nor can AI use persuasive conversation or open questions to persuade a candidate or client that spending the next 45 minutes in an interview can change your/their/his/her life.
Whilst technology helps us find candidates faster, helps us search deeper for hidden gems and helps us research clients like never before, the art of conversation – especially in recruitment – has never been more important.
